Minutes: 1999-2000 School Year
Officers: 1999-2000
Katy Culligan – president
Dusten Olds – vice president
Josh McLin – treasurer
Jennifer Schedler – activities director
Scott Johnson – secretary
September 10, 1999:
Attendees: Katy Culligan, Dusten Olds, Jennifer Schedler, Jeannette Abbott
I was surprised that only four people showed up, but I think I
found out why: it looks like me email about the meeting was sent back to
me. Anyway, we had to decide a few things.
The most important of those things being the CAR WASH this SATURDAY, Sept.
18, from 9:30-2:30. It will be held at the SHELL station across the
street from the Galleria. I believe it is on the corner of Clayton and
Brentwood. Please, as you can see, out list of people is small, so we
need everyone's help. Jen has volunteered to take myself and Jeannette,
and Dustin has volunteered to take Raul. If anyone else needs a ride, let
me know, asap. Please be there at 9:30. We will leave by 2:30 at the
latest. Also, who has our supplies? I think it may be Matt.
Finally, dues for this year will be the same as last year $15. You can
pay at the next general meeting. I will let you know when it is.
Directions for the car wash if anyone needs them:
From Wash U:
take forrest park parkway to I-170 south
after getting on I-170 south, immediately take the
Brentwood exit.
After getting on Brentwood, get in the left lane FAST
because the first light (Clayton Ave) is where
you want to turn left. (if you're stopped at the
light, you will see the gas station diagnolly from
you across the street)
It's on the corner of Brentwood and Clayton.

September 24, 1999:
Attendees: Katy Culligan, Dusten Olds, Scott Johnson, Jennifer Schedler
Last week's meeting was mainly focused at brainstorming events for the
coming year:
Briefing from the Car Wash last week: we grossed ~ $225 from our fundraising car wash last week!
Service Events:
-Bring in an engineer involved in the Peace Corp. - Katy
-Go to a local school to work with the students - Jen
+Start finding people to go (4-5 needed)
+Research career fairs at schools
-Earthquake Awareness Week at the Science Center 1st weekend of February
+This will probably require 4 shifts of 2 people each.
-Explore getting involved in the Future Cities program
Other activities:
-Have a mixer with a group of working engineers.
-Ask Prof. Truman about developing a student advisory board.
Honor Society business:
+Prof. Gould and Truman are members of Chi Espilon; we need to find out if
there are any other professors that are members to prepare to apply for
membership in Chi Epsilon.
+It was agreed that we should induct people both semesters into the honor
society, but only have an induction ceremony in the spring.
+We need to figure out who has paid the dues and who hasn't.
+If anyone wants to update the WUCEHS web page, go to it.
+It was also discussed that we should start centralizing all of the
records in the ‘wucehs’ account in CEC.
October 8, 1999:
Attendees: Katy Culligan, Dusten Olds, Scott Johnson, Jennifer Schedler
There is a treasurers’ meeting coming up soon; unlike last year when we needed to apply through EnCouncil for funding, we need to go directly to SU this year.
We also discussed the need to write our by-laws and start updating electronic data in the ‘wucehs’ account:
Jen – schools work is in progress. The options are to: (1) sponsor our own school – a lot of time and energy, (2) co-sponsor with CH2MHILL – who already has a program set up at Gateway MS. Jen is getting the information together to start working on the Future Cities program with CH2MHILL. The purpose of the program will be to go to the school and evaluate and assist students in preparing their city designs and inputting their designs into SimCity 2000for the Future Cities competition.
Also, Jen is working on assembling information for possibly arranging a career fair/science fair judging activity.
Supplementary info from Jen Schedler:
I have some more information on the Future City Program. For those of you
who were not at the meeting or don't remember, this is a program where
middle schools in St. Louis compete against each other for the best
SimCity city. I have now found out that it is a nationwide contest and
the best city fromn the region goes onto nationals during EnWeek. We
would get to come into the schools and help them with their cities. It
will be starting soon and ending in Jan. The judgin is based on:
1) The computer city they do in Sim City (they have to keep their
pollution, taxes, etc down to a certain level)
2) A printout of their city (a big poster)
3) The scaled model of their city
4) A 500-word essay on a set topic Essay on designing and building a
sister city on Mars in the year 2030
5) The presentation they do of their city
Basically, our end consists of I would say about one school a week or
less. We are going to go along with CH2MHill to the schools they do. I
said I thought we could send ~3 people every time. (but this can vary)
So, if everyone could please send me times they are available between
8am-3:30pm Mon-Fri this would help me out so I don't have to contact
everyone every time I find out about a school visiting. For instance,
send me Mon 1-3:30pm, Fri 8am-noon, if these are the times you are free.
Please send this to js14@cec preferably by this weekend.
October 22, 1999:
Attendees: Dusten Olds, Josh McLin, Jen Schedler, Jeannette Abbott, and Katy Culligan
1. New members will be inducted at a meeting on November 19 at 12:30
(same as usual). Prof. Dyke will/already has sent out the letters
inviting people to join.
2. Only Dusten, Doug and Raul need to pay dues from last year.
3. If you haven't given Jen your availability to participate in the
future cities program, please do so.
4. Sri suggested that we (or ASCE, or both) plan a field trip to a
concrete batching plant. Jen will check into it.
November 5, 1999:
Attendees: Jen Schedler, Scott Johnson, and Katy Culligan
Discussed Future Cities program. Agreed that Jen and Katy would go Thursday
and that Scott and Doug would go the next Monday. Briefing to follow next
meeting.
November 19, 1999:
Attendees: Jen Schedler, Dusten Olds, Katy Culligan, Scott Munson, Jennifer Becker, Ellen Beckmann, Katy Owen, Adam Scates, Scott Johnson, and Jeannette Abbott.
Jennifer Becker
Ellen Beckmann
Katie Owen

3. New members dues are $15 lifetime. Dues can be paid to Tesha in the Civil Engineering office or to the treasurer Josh McLin. Membership dues will go to bringing a Chi Epsilon member to Washington University to inspect and induct our chapter into Chi Epsilon. There will be an official induction ceremony for all new members for the fall and spring semesters next semester.
January 28, 2000:
Next week is Earthquake Awareness weekend at the Science Center.
Katy & Scott are scheduled to help from 8-10
Jen and Dusten (tentatively) from 10-12:30
We still need people to stay there from 12:30-3.
Dusten has also reserved the Shell station by the Galleria (same as
last time) to have our car wash. That will be on March 26 from 10-2pm.
Katy will be sending letters for new initiates in about 3 weeks and will
be working on bringing in the speaker we need for Chi Epsilon initiation.
February 11, 2000:
Earthquake Awareness weekend at the Science Center was a success. We had a good attendance throughout the afternoon.
Today’s general body meeting attendance was: Dusten, Raul, Jen, Josh, John, Katie, Katy, Scott J., Scott M., Jeannette, and Adam.
A previous informal meeting of officers established the time and location of this year’s induction ceremony. This information will be updated shortly.
Some members still have not paid their dues.
There is an REU (Research Experiences for Undergraduates) program at
the University of Oklahoma. Persons interested in this should contact Katy
Culligan for more information.

March 20, 2000:
The initiation dinner for the new officers is planned for April 7. It has been decided that the initial date of April 7, decided on previously, will remain the date to have the dinner even though there are conflicts with other events. The speaker for the event will be Dr. Truman.
Thanks to everyone who helped out at the car wash: Jeanette Abbott, Jennifer Schedler, Scott Johnson, Adam Scates, and Katie Owen.
New supplies were purchased, reducing the net revenue to $70. Planning
for next year should yield higher profits, since the purchase of new supplies
took away from both time and revenue. We lost a few customers due to the
long wait towards the end, due to fewer than expected volunteers for the
car wash.
April 7, 2000:
The induction ceremony for the new officers was conducted today to welcome the 2000-2001 officers of the honor society:
Ellen Beckmann – president
Andy Stark – vice president
Kathryn Sarnecki – treasurer
Katie Owen – activities director
Jennifer Becker – secretary
We congratulate the new officers on their efforts to help the honor
society continue to grow and help promote the standards of excellence of
the civil engineering department.
